What happened

The bow thruster motor could not be started from both local and remote positions in spite of the indication of READY TO START is lit on the THRUSTER CONTROLLER panel. The motor was turning freely by hand and the motor insulation readings are fine. Remote troubleshooting measures could not really locate the cause of the problem.

Root cause

The cause of the failure was a missing piece of condenser from the neutral board which is located inside the Bow thruster panel.

Corrective actions

The condensers are a very fragile unit in the board and can part off anytime owing to excessive vibrations and heavy pounding/pitching of the vessel.
Periodic inspection of the Bow Thruster control panel is required to detect any loose connections or parts broken due to vibration.
