For a long lasting pump staffing box correct installation is critical. Make sure to remove old packing and clean internal. Inspect shaft for wear, replace if worn otherwise tightness could not be achieved.

Cut ends of packing segment at 45 deg so segment get self-sealed when tightened and ends pressed against each other.

Install packing segments rotated 90 - 120 deg against each other for better sealing.

Gradually and evenly tighten gland nut while pump is running until desired leakage is achieved. Normally drop-like leakage required.

Do not over tighten.

Recheck after periodically and retighten as necessary.
