Answer:

Before aligning couplings check:

1) Bedplate intact and pads contact surface is clean.
2) Both units being aligned (f. e. pump and motor) pads are intact and their contact surfaces clean.
3) Anchor bolts are tight.
4) Both units are firmly bolted down.
5) All connections (piping) are made.
6) Bearings are in good condition.
7) Both units shafts in good condition: not bent, no axial and radial play.

For coupling alignment below methods can be used:

Rough alignment:
1) Straight edge.
2) Feeler gauges.
3) Calipers.
Precision alignment
4) Dial indicator. 5) Laser alignment system

Alignment conducted in the following sequence

a) vertical angular - 0 angle between shaft axises in vertical plane
b) vertical parallel - 0 offset between shaft axises in vertical plane
c) horizontal angular - 0 angle between shaft axises in horizontal plane
d) horizontal parallel - 0 offset between shaft axises in horizontal plane
