During a SIRE inspection our vessel's manifolds were not marked with their SWL, so an observation has been addressed to the vessel.

As per OCIMF/SIGTTO '' Recommendation for Liquefied Gas Carrier Manifold '' Second edition 2018, it is recommended that the cargo manifolds should be permanently and clearly marked, at a suitable location, with its designated SWL. The manifold arrangement should be marked on the ship side shell.

I would like to know the following:

  • In the operational terms, what is the purpose of having the following values clearely marked on cargo maniflods.

SWL : a)vertical force, b)lateral force, c) axial force and d) moment ,

Thanks and best regards.

Answer:

SWL markings on the manifold should be helpful for terminal personnel during the setting up and adjustement of the loading arm. As any other lifting equipment, loading arm has it’s own SWL which must not be exceeded with vessel movement due to current, swell, tide and ballasting.
