The company should carry out internal safety audits on board and ashore at intervals not exceeding twelve months to verify whether safety and pollution-prevention activities comply with the safety management system. In exceptional circumstances, this interval may be exceeded by not more than three months. (ISM Code 12.1) When reviewing records, inspectors need only review documents that go back no more than the last two internal audits or 9 months, whichever the greater and which have been completed under the current ship management operation.
