Starting from a cold condition without warming up is possible, but it does not contribute to continued successful operation of the unit. The thermal stress developed in the casings and rotors by a rapid heating have a harmful effect. The turbine must be warmed slowly by recommended warm-up procedure rates because of close clearances. They will be distorted due to local misalignments in the case of rapid heating.
