The temperature of the feed water for an auxiliary boiler is automatically controlled by a pneumatically actuated steam valve at the inlet to the pre-heater. It is noticed that during high demand the temperature falls by an unacceptable amount and takes a long time to return to the set temperature even though the steam supply pressure remains constant. What may be the cause?

The controller proportional band is set too wide and the reset time is set too long.
