Why do readings obtained from a float type ullage tape sometimes require a tape correction?

Answer:

When measuring the liquid level in the cargo tank of a liquefied gas carrier a number of different corrections may be necessary to get a true reading.

The length of tape in contact with very cold cargo vapors may contract.
