If a ship is to be laid up for an indefinite period of time:

  • the saltwater side of the main condenser and other heat exchangers should be drained and dried out after closing the sea valves to prevent the formation of salt deposits
  • the freshwater side of heat exchangers should be drained as well in case of laying up the vessel in cold areas to prevent frost damage
