Answer:

Duty Engineer is responsible for safe and efficient operation of all equipment and mechanisms, safety of personnel in the Engine Room, for fast and efficient execution of orders from the bridge or control panel, maintaining Engine Logbook, Oil Record Book and other reporting as requested.

The presence of a Chief Engineer in the engine room does not relieve the Duty Engineer of responsibility for the watch until the Chief Engineer takes over control of the power plant.

When the ER crew is engaged in preventive maintenance or other work within the engine room, the Duty Engineer must ensure the safe and efficient performance of these works.

The term "assistant engineer" refers to an engineer who assists a senior mechanic and is also considered a Duty Engineer.
