Answer:

Stern tube seal oil samples to be taken regularly from the sampling valve to determine water content. As seal get worn the water content will get higher and emulsify the oil.

If outboard seal leaks, the following steps are to be taken:

  • Recharge with high viscosity oil
  • Disconnect oil supply line from header tank and reconnect to a drum which in order to give a variable head. By raising and lowering the drum the oil pressure in the system can be made to match the water pressure from outside.
  • Keep maintaining oil level in header tank

These actions will allow vessel to operate safely until dry dock scheduled where seal could be replaced.
