A ribbed rubber insert within a metal tube that allows water lubrication of an outer propeller shaft bearing.

Related Terms

STERN TUBE

The watertight tube enclosing and supporting the propeller shaft on bearings

STERN GLAND

A packing which surrounds the propeller shaft as it passes through the vessel's hull and prevents sea water from entering the vessel through the hole in the hull.

SHAFT LOG

The centrally bored timber structure in which the propeller shaft is inserted and held in alignment.

DISCHARGE TUBE

  1. An evacuated enclosure containing a gas at low pressure, through which current can flow when sufficient voltage is applied between metal electrodes in the tube. Also known as electric-discharge tube. 2. A tube through which steam and water are released into a boiler drum.

REVOLUTION COUNTER

An instrument for registering the number of revolutions of a shaft, particularly a propeller shaft of a vessel (when it may be called ENGINE REVOLUTION COUNTER). This information is useful in estimating a vessel’s speed through the water.

SHAFT HORSEPOWER

The effective horsepower as measured at the engine and propeller shaft coupling.

GEARBOX

A system of gears which alter the ratio between the revolution of the engine and the propeller shaft so the propeller operates in a relatively efficient speed range. By using a gearbox the engine and the propeller shaft will revolve at different speeds.

STRUT BEARING

The aftermost bearing for a propeller shaft found in the strut.

BOSS PLATE

A reinforcing plate at the stern frame's propeller shaft aperture.

PROPELLER SHAFT

The shaft connecting the propeller to the gear box.
