Typically it is the distance from the fore part of the hull to the after part of the hull, taken at the upperside of the uppermost, weathertight deck, or, in the case of open vessels, at the height of the gunwale. Used as one of the primary determinants for a vessel's manning requirements.

HALF-TIDE BASIN
A lock of very large size and usually of irregular shape, the gates of which are kept open for several hours after high tide so that vessels may enter as long as there is sufficient depth over the sill. Vessels remain in the half-tide basin until the ensuing flood tide before they may pass through the gate to the inner harbor. If entry to the inner harbor is required before this time, water must be admitted to the half-tide basin from some external source.

HEIGHT OF TIDE
Vertical distance from the chart sounding datum to the water surface at any stage of the tide. It is positive if the water level is higher than the chart sounding datum. The vertical distance from the chart sounding datum to a high water datum is called RISE OF TIDE.
