SEAL WELD

A weld used primarily to obtain tightness and prevent leakage.

BACKING RING

A strip of thin plate used on the inner surfaces of the abutting ends of pipe, tubes, or plates which are butt-welded. Its purpose is to prevent irregularities at the base weld and to permit penetration at its root.

BUTT WELD

A circumferential weld in pipe fusing the abutting pipe walls completely from inside wall to outside wall.

SOCKET FITTING

A fitting used to join pipe in which the pipe is inserted into the fitting. A fillet weld is then made around the edge of the fitting and the outside wall of the pipe.

ARGON

A colourless gas, chemically inactive used for shielding the weld from atmosphere in welding.

CRATER

1) The central magma outlet tube of a volcano. 2) A ground depression caused by explosion, impact or remnant from extinct volcano. 3) A depression in a weld as the result of molten metal displaced from the weld point.

HOSE TEST

The method by which a seam or weld is tested for watertightness, by applying a jet of water from a hose from one side, and checks made from the other side for any seepage, or passage of water.

BEAM CLIP

A device for attaching a pipe hanger to its associated structural beam when it is undesirable to weld the pipe hanger to supporting structural steelwork. Also known as girder clamp; girder clip.

COVER PLATE

A pane of glass in a welding helmet or goggles which protects the colored lens excluding harmful light rays from damage by weld spatter.
