The pressure at which a substance exists in the liquid state at its critical temperature. (In other words it is the saturation pressure at the critical temperature)

Related Terms

LATENT HEAT OF VAPORIZATION

Quantity of heat to change the state of a substance from liquid to vapor (or vice versa) without change of temperature.

LATENT HEAT

The heat required to cause a change in state of a substance from solid to liquid (latent heat of fusion) or from liquid to vapor (latent heat of vaporization). These phase changes occur without change of temperature at the melting point and boiling point, respectively.

HEAT OF FUSION

The latent heat absorbed when a substance changes from a solid state to a liquid state.

OIL

A greasy, unctuous liquid of vegetable, animal, mineral or synthetic origin. Hydrocarbons in the liquid state at the prevailing temperature and pressure conditions called.

KELVIN EQUATION

An equation giving the increase in vapor pressure of a substance which accompanies an increase in curvature of its surface; the equation describes the greater rate of evaporation of a small liquid droplet as compared to that of a larger one, and the greater solubility of small solid particles as compared to that of larger particles.

SUBCOOLING

The process of cooling a liquid to a temperature below its saturation temperature for any given saturation pressure.

WATER CUT (WC)

The water volume flow rate, relative to the total liquid volume flow rate (oil and water), both converted to volumes at standard pressure and temperature. The WC is normally expressed as a percentage.

VACUUM SEPARATOR

A separator that utilizes subatmospheric pressure to remove certain gases and liquids from another liquid because of their difference in vapor pressure.

HEAT OF VAPORIZATION

The latent heat absorbed by a substance as it changes from a liquid to a vapor.

WAX

Substance formulated from paraffin content while being frozen at a low temperature. However, it can be easily turned into liquid distilled oil by means of heating to a temperature greater than the freezing point. Generally, the freezing point is less than 40 degrees Celsius. The WAX ingredient is included in all fuel oil (including HFO, MGO, and MDO). Due to recent technological changes in fuel oil refinement, the amount of WAX contained in all fuel oils, including distilled oil, has increased.
