Air at any pressure greater than atmospheric pressure.

Related Terms

ANEROID BAROMETER

An instrument which determines atmospheric pressure by the effect of such pressure on a thin-metal cylinder from which the air has been partly exhausted

VACUUM PUM

Low-pressure air compressor that takes suction from a region below atmospheric pressure (turbine condenser) and discharge into the atmosphere.

ISOBAR

A line connecting points having the same atmospheric pressure reduced to a common datum, usually sea level

AUTOMATIC LEVEL CONTROL

  1. A circuit that keeps the output of a radio transmitter or other device essentially constant, even in the presence of large changes in the input amplitude. Abbreviated ALC. 2. In an automotive vehicle, a system in which two air-chamber shock absorbers in the rear are fed compressed air by an electric compressor; pressure in the air chambers is determined automatically by sensors to maintain the vehicle at a predetermined height regardless of load.

FAHRENHEIT TEMPERATURE

Temperature based on a scale in which, under standard atmospheric pressure

FULLY REFRIGERATED VESSEL

A gas carrier designed to carry cargoes fully refrigerated at atmospheric pressure

PRESSURE GRADIENT

A measure of the rate of change in atmospheric pressure with distance. The closer the isobars are together, the higher the pressure gradient is and the stronger the winds will be.

DECOMPRESSION CHAMBER

  1. A steel chamber fitted with auxiliary equipment to raise its air pressure to a value two to six times atmospheric pressure; used to relieve a diver who has decompressed too quickly in ascending. 2. Such a chamber in which conditions of high atmospheric pressure can be simulated for experimental purposes.

PRESSURE GAGE

Pressure differential above or below atmospheric pressure.

CONSTANT-PRESSURE SURFACE

In meteorology, an imaginary surface along which the atmospheric pressure is everywhere equal at a given instant. Also called ISOBARIC SURFACE.
