A bladed, rotating component of a water treatment plant; used to infuse air into the water.

A common water treatment chemical, sodium carbonate.

SODIUM SULFITE (Na2S03)

A chemical used with water treatment to remove small amounts of oxygen.

LIME

A common water treatment chemical.

STEAM GENERATING UNIT

A unit to which water, fuel, and air are supplied and in which steam is generated. It consists of a boiler furnace, and fuel burning equipment, and may include as component parts water walls, superheater, reheater, economizer, air heater, or any combination thereof.

EDTA

A chelating agent used with boiler water treatment. Often referred as the replacement for the phosphate-hydroxide treatment method.

DEMAND REGULATOR

A component of an open-circuit diving system that permits the diver to expel used air directly into the water without rebreathing exhaled carbon dioxide.

SEA-TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE CORRECTION

A correction due to a difference in the temperature of the sea and air, particularly the sextant altitude correction caused by abnormal terrestrial refraction occurring when there is a nonstandard density lapse rate in the atmosphere due to a difference in the temperature of the water and air at the surface.

STEAM FOG

Fog formed when water vapor is added to air which is much colder than the source of the vapor. It may be formed when very cold air drifts across relatively warm water. At temperatures below about-20°F, ice particles or droxtals may be formed in the air producing a type of ice fog known as frost smoke.

CLOSED SYSTEM

  1. A system for water handling that does not permit air to enter. 2. A system which is isolated so that it cannot exchange matter or energy with its surroundings and can therefore attain a state of thermodynamic equilibrium. Also known as isolated system.
