Drilling in which the drilling fluid is not returned to the surface.

Related Terms

NOZZLE

A short flanged or welded neck connection on a drum or shell for the outlet or inlet of fluids; also a protecting spout for the outlet or inlet of fluids; also a projecting spout through which fluid flows.

DOUBLE-PIPE EXCHANGER

Fluid-fluid heat exchanger made of two concentric pipe sections; one fluid (such as a coolant) flows in the annular space between pipes, and the other fluid (such as hot process stream) flows through the inner pipe.

TURBINE

A machine that develops rotary power by directing a high-velocity fluid against blades mounted around the rim of a wheel. As a high-velocity fluid passes through a turbine, it pushes against the blades and causes the wheel to turn. The rotation of the wheel turns the axle, which drives the connected machinery.

DEPTH-TYPE FILTRATION

Removal of solids by passing the carrier fluid through a mass-filter medium that provides a tortuous path with many entrapments to catch the solids.

DRY CLEANING

To utilize dry-cleaning fluid to remove stains from textile.

THREE-WAY VALVE

Multi-orifice (opening) flow control valve with three fluid flow openings.

APPARENT WEIGHT

For a body immersed in a fluid (such as air), the resultant of the gravitational force and the buoyant force of the fluid acting on the body; equal in magnitude to the true weight minus the weight of the displaced fluid.

DIRECT-EXPANSION COIL

A finned coil, used in air cooling, inside of which circulates a cold fluid or evaporating refrigerant. Abbreviated DX coil.

DISPLACER-TYPE METER

Apparatus to detect liquid level or gas density by measuring the effect of the fluid (gas or liquid) on the buoyancy of a displacer unit immersed within the fluid.

BETA RATING

the method of comparing filter performance based on efficiency. This is done using the Multi-Pass Test which counts the number of particles of a given size before and after fluid passes through a filter.
