Gas flow when the pressure drop due to the flow of a gas through a system is large enough, compared with the inlet pressure, to cause a 10% or greater decrease in gas density.

Related Terms

DALL TUBE

Fluid-flow measurement device, similar to a venturi tube, inserted as a section of a fluid-carrying pipe; flow rate is measured by pressure drop across a restricted throat.

RESTRICTOR

A device for producing a deliberate pressure drop or resistance in a line by reducing the cross-sectional flow area.

CLOSE-OFF RATING

  1. The maximum allowable pressure drop to which a valve can be subjected at commercial shutoff. 2. The maximum allowable pressure drop between the outlet of a three-way valve and either of the two inlets, or between the inlet and either of the two outlets.

FLOW NOZZLE

A flowmeter in a closed conduit, consisting of a short flared nozzle of reduced diameter inset into the inner diameter of a pipe; used to cause a temporary pressure drop in flowing fluid to determine flow rate via measurement of static pressures before and after the nozzle.

REACTION TURBINE

A reaction turbine utilizes a jet of steam that flows from a nozzle on the rotor. Actually, the steam is directed into the moving blades by fixed blades designed to expand the steam. The result is a small increase in velocity over that of the moving blades. These blades form a wall of moving nozzles that further expand the steam. The steam flow is partially reversed by the moving blades, producing a reaction on the blades. Since the pressure drop is small across each row of nozzles (blades), the speed is comparatively low. Therefore, more rows of moving blades are needed than in an impulse turbine.

PRESSURE DROP

Resistance to flow created by the element (media) in a filter or other equipment. Defined as the difference in pressure upstream (inlet side of the unit) and downstream (outlet side of the unit).

PNEUMATICS

Engineering science pertaining to gaseous pressure and flow.

GAS-LIQUID-RATIO (GLR)

The gas volume flow rate, relative to the total liquid volume flow rate (oil and water), all volumes converted to volumes at standard pressure and temperature.

BYPASS VALVE

A valve mechanism that assures system fluid flow when a preselected differential pressure across is exceeded; the valve allows all or part of the flow to bypass the filter element.

FILTER RATED CAPACITY

The amount of contaminants a filter will hold before an excessive pressure drop is caused. Some filters have bypass valves which open when a filter reaches its rated capacity.
