GASOHOL

A blend of 10% anhydrous ethanol (ethyl alcohol) and 90% gasoline, by volume. Used as a motor fuel.

VAPOR PRESSURE-REID (RVP)

Measure of the pressure of vapor accumulated above a sample of gasoline or other volatile fuel in a standard bomb at 100°F (37.8°C). Used to predict the vapor locking tendencies of the fuel in a vehicle's fuel system. Controlled by law in some areas to limit air pollution from hydrocarbon evaporation while dispensing.

STABILIZER

A vessel or system used to remove the liquid condensate or gasoline from the gas stream.

STABILIZATION

The process used to remove liquid condensate or gasoline from natural gas.

AROMATICS

Substances used as intermediates for the production of chemicals as solvents and for gasoline blending. Examples of these products are benzene and xylene.

ABSORPTION PROCESS

A method in which light oil is introduced into an absorption tower so that it absorbs the gasoline in the rising wet gas; the light oil is then distilled to separate the gasoline.

AIRCO-HOOVER SWEETENING

Removal of mercaptans from gasoline by caustic and water washes, then heating the dried gasoline and passing it with some oxygen through a reactor containing a slurry of diatomaceous earth impregnated with copper chloride; the oxygen regenerates the catalyst.

AIR-INJECTION REACTOR

A unit which mixes fresh air with hot exhaust gases in the exhaust manifold to react with any gasoline that has escaped unburned from the cylinders. Abbreviated AIR.
