Motion along a curved path.

Related Terms

FREE FALL

The ideal falling motion of a body acted upon only by the pull of the earth's gravitational field.

ELECTRIC DRIVE

A mechanism which transmits motion from one shaft to another and controls the velocity ratio of the shafts by electrical means.

PRECESSION

The change in the direction of the axis of rotation of a spinning body, as a gyroscope, when acted upon by a torque. The direction of motion of the axis is such that it causes the direction of spin of the gyroscope to tend to coincide with that of the impressed torque. The horizontal component of precession is called drift, and the vertical component is called topple. Also called INDUCED PRECESSION, REAL PRECESSION.

SIMPLE HARMONIC MOTION

The projection of uniform circular motion on a diameter of the circle of such motion. The combination of two or more simple harmonic motions results in COMPOUND HARMONIC MOTION.

PISTON ENGINE

A type of engine characterized by reciprocating motion of pistons in a cylinder. Also known as displacement engine; reciprocating engine.

AIDED TRACKING

A system of radar-tracking a target signal in bearing, elevation, or range, or any combination of these variables, in which the rate of motion of the tracking equipment is machine-controlled in collaboration with an operator so as to minimize tracking error.

VORTEX

(1) The swirling motion of a liquid in a vessel at the entrance to a discharge nozzle. (2) The point in a cyclonic gas path where the two spirals change general direction by 180o.

BELL CRANK

The mechanism that can be used to change direction of motion and increase or decrease force or travel.

ESCAPEMENT

A ratchet device that permits motion in one direction slowly.

LANGMUIR DIFFUSION PUMP

A type of diffusion pump in which the mercury vapor emerges from a nozzle, giving it motion in a direction away from the high-vacuum side of the pump.
