Acammechanism in which the cam follower undergoes translational motion parallel to the camshaft as a roller attached to it rolls in a groove in a circular cylinder concentric with the camshaft.

Related Terms

DISK CAM

A disk with a contoured edge which rotates about an axis perpendicular to the disk, communicating motion to the cam follower which remains in contact with the edge of the disk.

VALVE LIFTER

Sometimes called a 'cam follower', a component in engine designs that use a linkage system between a cam and the valve it operates. The lifter typically translates the rotational motion of the cam to a reciprocating linear motion in the linkage system.

DRUM CAM

A device consisting of a drum with a contoured surface which communicates motion to a cam follower as the drum rotates around an axis.

CAMSHAFT

A rotating shaft to which a cam is attached.

COEFFICIENT OF KINETIC FRICTION

The ratio of the frictional force, parallel to the surface of contact, that opposes the motion of a body which is sliding or rolling over another, to the force, normal to the surface of contact, with which the bodies press against each other.

KNIFE-EDGE CAM FOLLOWER

A cam follower having a sharp narrow edge or point like that of a knife; useful in developing cam profile relationships.

COORDINATE PAPER

Paper ruled with lines to aid in the plotting of coordinates. In its most common form, it has two sets of parallel lines, usually at right angles to each other, when it is also called CROSS- SECTION PAPER. A type ruled with two sets of mutually-perpendicular, parallel lines spaced according to the logarithms of consec- utive numbers is called logarithmic coordinate papa or semilogarithmic coordinate paper as both or only one set of lines is spaced logarithmically. A type ruled with concentric circles and radial lines from the common center is called polar coordinate paper. Also called GRAPH PAPER.

SWASH PLATE

Type of compressor designed to compress gas, with piston motion parallel to crankshaft.

PERSPECTIVE MAP PROJECTION UPON A TANGENT CYLINDER

A cylindrical map projection upon a cylinder tangent to the ellipsoid produced by perspective projection from the ellipsoid’s center. The geographic meridians are represented by a family of equally spaced parallel straight lines, perpendicular to a second family of parallel straight lines which represent the geographic parallels of latitude. The spacing, with respect to the equator of the lines which represent the parallels of latitude, increases as the tangent function of the latitude; the line representing 90° latitude is at an infinite distance from the line which represents the equator. Not to be confused with MERCATOR MAP PROJECTION to which it bears a general resemblance.

OPTICAL INDICATOR

An instrument which makes a plot of pressure in the cylinder of an engine as a function of piston (or volume) displacement, making use of magnification by optical systems and photographic recording; for example, the small motion of a pressure diaphragm may be transmitted to a mirror to deflect a beam of light.
