An instrument for measuring the flexibility of materials.

INDICATED AIR SPEED

The aircraft speed shown on the air speed indicator gauge. IAS corrected for instrument error and atmospheric density is equal to true air speed.

KATHAROMETER

An instrument for detecting the presence of small quantities of gases in air by measuring the resulting change in thermal conductivity of the air. Also known as thermal conductivity cell.

ODOMETER

  1. An instrument for measuring distance traversed, as of a vehicle. 2. The indicating gage of such an instrument. 3. A wheel pulled by surveyors to measure distance traveled.

An instrument used to measure vacuum by the ionization effect that an electron flow (from an incandescent filament to a charged grid) has on gas molecules.

ELECTRIC HYGROMETER

An instrument for indicating by electrical means the humidity of the ambient atmosphere; usually based on the relation between the electric conductance of a film of hygroscopic material and its moisture content.

INDEX ERROR

The error in the reading of an instrument equal to the difference between the zero of the scale and the zero of the index. In a marine sextant it is due primarily to lack of parallelism of the index mirror and the horizon glass at zero reading.
