A centrifugal pump for lifting water from deep, small diameter wells.

Related Terms

SPILT CASE PUMP

A centrifugal pump designed so that the volute case is split horizontally. The case divides on a plane that cuts through the eye of the impeller.

GRAVEL PUMP

A centrifugal pump with renewable impellers and lining, used to pump a mixture of gravel and water.

CAVITATION

A process occurring within the impeller of a centrifugal pump when pressure at the inlet to the impeller falls below that of the vapor pressure of the liquid being pumped. The bubbles of vapor which are formed collapse with impulsive force in the higher pressure regions of the impeller. This effect can cause significant damage to the impeller surfaces and, furthermore, pumps may loose suction.

SUMP

A sewage tank installed below the level of the lowest floor, with a submersibletype centrifugal pump that is used to pump the sewage into the public sewer main.

SELF-PRIMING PUMP

An end-suction centrifugal pump with the suction mounted above the eye of the impeller, a recirculation port between suction and discharge, or a flap gate on the suction connection.

SEALLESS PUMP

A centrifugal pump with impellers that have magnetic hubs to provide speed and positional control. Sealless pump should be installed so it has a ans. suction head.

FRAME-MOUNTED PUMP

End suction centrifugal pumps designed so that the pump bearings and pump shaft are independent of the motor. This type of pump requires a coupling between the pump and the motor in order to transfer energy from the motor to the pump.

SLINGER RING

A ring of leather or rubber placed around the pump shaft in back of the stuffing box. Used to protect the bearings from water leakage out of the stuffing box.

DRAIN WELL

A sump that collects water seepage for pump out.

OPEN WELL

  1. A well whose diameter is great enough (1 meter or more) for a person to descend to the water level. 2. An artificial pond filling a large excavation in the zone of saturation up to the water table.
