A positive-displacement unit which trap a given volume of gas, compresses it, and ejects it from the machine. It usually has a rotor revolving off-center in a cylinder with sliding vanes forced against the cylinder wall, thus produces higher pressure from cylinder discharge line.

PISTON BLOWER

A piston-operated, positive-displacement air compressor used for stationary, automobile, and marine duty.

PERFORMANCE CHART

Graphical representations showing the abilities of rotating equipment at various operating conditions; for example, the performance curve for a compressor would include rotor speed for various intake and outlet pressures versus gas flow rate adjusted for temperature, density, viscosity, head, and other factors.

OPEN-CYCLE GAS TURBINE

A gas turbine prime mover in which air is compressed in the compressor element, fuel is injected and burned in the combustor, and the hot products are expanded in the turbine element and exhausted to the atmosphere.

MIXED-FLOW IMPELLER

An impeller for a pump or compressor which combines radialand axial-flow principles.

LIQUID PISTON ROTARY COMPRESSOR

A rotary compressor in which a multiblade rotor revolves in a casing partly filled with liquid, for example, water.

A heat exchanger for cooling fluid between stages of a multistage compressor with consequent saving in power.

COMPRESSOR

A device which converts mechanical force and motion into pneumatic flow power.

ACCESSIBLE HERMETIC

An assembly of motor and compressor, inside a single bolted housing unit.

BACK WORK RATIO

Is the fraction of the gas turbine work used to drive the compressor.

INSOLUBLES

Particles of carbon or agglomerates of carbon and other material. Indicates deposition or dispersant drop-out in an engine. Not serious in a compressor or gearbox unless there has been a rapid increase in these particles.
