(ISM) - an amendment to SOLAS in 1994 which requires vessel owners and operators to have an approved system for operating, managing, and manning, vessels under their control in a process oriented fashion. This system must contain certain parts covering the requirements of the ISM code. When approved both the company and the vessel is issued a compliance certificate which will be required by government officials in 130 maritime countries on July 1, 1998. Without these certificates a vessel may be denied entry or detained in port until such time as compliance with the ISM code is affirmed. This code is a maritime variant of the ISO 9000 program.

  9. Receiving the SMS and reporting its deficiencies to the shore based management.
  10. Resource and Personnel: Company should ensure master properly qualified and fully conversant with company’s SMS. Company should ensure each ship is manned with qualified, Certificated and medically fit seafarers and given proper familiarisation with their duties.
  11. Shipboard operations: Company should established procedures for the preparation of plans and instructions for key shipboard operations concerning the safety of the ship and prevention of pollution.
  12. Emergency preparedness: Company should established procedures to identify, describe and respond to potential emergency shipboard situations, and programmes for drills and exercises.
  13. Non-Conformities & Reportings: When any work goes out of plan. Company should establish procedures for the implementation of corrective action.
  14. Maintenance of the ship and equipment: Company should ensure inspection held, any Non-Conformity is reported, appropriate corrective action taken and all activities recorded.
  15. Documentation’s: Company should establish and maintain procedures to control all documents and data which are relevant to SMS.
  16. Internal audit: Company should carryout internal audit to verify all policy implemented.
  17. External audit: To verify company and ship are working as per SMS.
  18. Certification: Safety Management Certificate to be given to a ship after audit.
