POPOV'S STABILITY CRITERION
A frequency domain stability test for systems consisting of a linear component described by a transfer function preceded by a nonlinear component characterized by an inputoutput function), with a unity gain feedback loop surrounding the series connection.

PILOT TUNNEL
A small tunnel or shaft excavated in advance of the main drivage in mining and tunnel building to gain information about the ground, create a free face, and thus simplify the blasting operations.

PILOT PLANT
A small version of a planned industrial plant, built to gain experience in operating the final plant.

LOWFREQUENCY GAIN
The gain of the voltage amplifier at frequencies less than those frequencies at which this gain is close to its maximum value.

LOWFREQUENCY CUTOFF
A frequency below which the gain of a system or device decreases rapidly.

LOOP GAIN
1. The ratio of the magnitude of the primary feedback signal in a feedback control system to the magnitude of the actuating signal. 2. Total usable power gain of a carrier terminal or twowire repeater; maximum usable gain is determined by, and may not exceed, the losses in the closed path.

INVERTING AMPLIFIER
Amplifier whose output polarity is reversed as compared to its input; such an amplifier obtains its negative feedback by a connection from output to input, and with high gain is widely used as an operational amplifier.

INTEGRAL NETWORK
A compensating network which produces high gain at low input frequencies and low gain at high frequencies, and is therefore useful in achieving low steadystate errors. Also known as lagging network; lag network.

HEAT BALANCE
The equilibrium which is known to exist when all sources of heat gain and loss for a given region or body are accounted for.

ISOTROPIC GAIN OF AN ANTENNA
The gain of an antenna in a given direction when the reference antenna is an isotropic antenna isolated in space. Also called ABSOLUTE GAIN OF AN ANTENNA.
