That part of the low side of an absorption system, used for absorbing vapor refrigerant.

Related Terms

THERMOSTATIC EXPANSION VALVE

Device in refrigerating system which reduces the pressure from the high side to the low side and is operated by pressure.

UNLOADER

A device in a compressor for equalizing high and low side pressures when the compressor stops and for a brief period after it starts in order to decrease the starting load on the motor.

EXPANSION VALVE

Device in refrigerating system which reduces the pressure from the high side to the low side and is operated by pressure.

HIGH-SIDE FLOAT

Refrigerant control mechanism which controls the level of the liquid refrigerant in the high-pressure side of mechanism.

ABSORPTION SYSTEM

A refrigeration system in which the refrigerant gas in the evaporator is taken up by an absorber and is then, with the application of heat, released in a generator.

NORTHEASTER, NOR’EASTER

A northeast wind, particularly a strong wind or gale associated with cold rainy weather. In the U.S., nor’easters generally occur on the north side of late-season low pressure systems which pass off the Atlantic seaboard, bringing onshore gales to the region north of the low. Combined with high tides, they can be very destructive.

ETHYL HEXANOL

Additive in absorption machines to reduce surface tension in the absorber.

VAPOR GENERATOR

A container of liquid, other than water, which is vaporized by the absorption of heat.

SUCTION SIDE

Low-pressure side of the system extending from the refrigerant control through the evaporator to the inlet valve of the compressor.

CASCADE RELIQUEFACTION CYCLE

A process in which vapour boil-off from cargo tanks is condensed in a cargo condenser in which the coolant is a refrigerant gas such as R22 or equivalent. The refrigerant gas is then compressed and passed through a conventional sea water-cooled condenser.
