Heat exchanger which removes heat from a substance.

Related Terms

BAUDELOT COOLER

Heat exchanger in which water flows by gravity over the outside of the tubes or plates.

GAS-COMPRESSION CYCLE

A refrigeration cycle in which hot, compressed gas is cooled in a heat exchanger, then passes into a gas expander which provides an exhaust stream of cold gas to another heat exchanger that handles the sensible-heat refrigeration effect and exhausts the gas to the compressor.

PLATEN

1.A flat plate against which something rests or is pressed. 2. The rubber-covered roller of a typewriter against which paper is pressed when struck by the typebars. 2. A flat surface for exchanging heat in a boiler or heat exchanger which may have extended heat transfer surfaces.

FLASH DRUM

A facility, such as a tower, which receives the products of a preheater or heat exchanger to release pressure; volatile components are vaporized and separated for further fractionation.

DOUBLE-PIPE EXCHANGER

Fluid-fluid heat exchanger made of two concentric pipe sections; one fluid (such as a coolant) flows in the annular space between pipes, and the other fluid (such as hot process stream) flows through the inner pipe.

CROSS-FLOW BAFFLE

A type of baffle in a shell-and-tube heat exchanger that directs shellside fluid back and forth or up and down across the tubes. Also known as transverse baffle.

JET CONDENSER

A direct contact heat exchanger in which steam to be condensed comes into direct contact with the cooling water (cold condensate) which is usually introduced in the form of a spray from a jet.

SURFACE CONDENSER

A shell-and-tube heat exchanger in which steam is condensed on the shell-side while cooling water flows through the tubes. The condensate and cooling water leave the system separately.

AFTERCOOLER

A heat exchanger that removes the heat of compression from the air (or other gas) after it leaves the last stage of a compressor.

SHELL and TUBE CONDENSER

A heat exchanger where one fluid circulates through tubes enclosed between two end-plates in a cylindrical shell and where the other fluid circulates inside the shell.
