Plate or cap which encloses compression end of compressor cylinder or combustion chamber of engine.

Related Terms

COMPRESSION RATIO

The ratio of the absolute pressure at the discharge from a compressor divided by the absolute pressure at the suction. For internal combustion engines compression ration is absolute pressure at the end of compression stroke divided by absolute pressure at beginning of this stroke

COMPRESSION IGNITION

Ignition produced by compression of the air in a cylinder of an internal combustion engine before fuel is admitted.

COMPRESSION PRESSURE

That pressure developed in a reciprocating piston engine at the end of the compression stroke without combustion of fuel.

CROWN SHEET

The plate forming the roof of an internally fired furnace or a combustion chamber.

TURBO CHARGER

The blades of a turbine in the outlet exhaust flow of an engine are driven by the gases flowing over them. Compressor blades at the other end of the same axle are spun in the inlet flow, drawing large volumes of air into the cylinders. This enables faster combustion than naturally aspirated engines and increases power of the engine.

FUSE BLASTING CAP

A small copper cylinder closed at one end and charged with a fulminate.

OVERHEAD-VALVE ENGINE

A fourstroke-cycle internal combustion engine having its valves located in the cylinder head, operated by pushrods that actuate rocker arms. Abbreviated OHV engine. Also known as valve-in-head engine.

SIMPLE CYCLE

Referring to the gas turbine cycle consisting only of compression, combustion and expansion.

FORCED DRAFT SYSTEM

A boiler draft system in which combustion air is blown or forced into the combustion chamber by a fan.

CONE VALVE

A divergent valve whose cone-shaped head in a fixed cylinder spreads water around the wide, downstream end of the cone in spillways of dams or hydroelectric facilities. Also known as Howell-Bunger valve.
