Resistance of start of motion.

Related Terms

LOWRY PROCESS

A system for wood preservation which uses atmospheric pressure at the start and then introduces preservative into the wood in a vacuum.

KICK OVER

To start firing; applied to internal combustion engines.

INITIAL SHOT START PRESSURE

In interior ballistics, the pressure required to start the motion of the projectile from its initial loaded position; in fixed ammunition, it includes pressure required to separate projectile and cartridge case and to start engraving the rotating band.

INERTIA STARTER

A device utilizing inertial principles to start the rotator of an internal combustion engine.

ANTI-WEAR ADDITIVE

Improves the service life of tribological elements operating in the boundary lubrication regime. Anti-wear compounds (for example, ZDDP and TCP) start decomposing at 90° to 100°C and even at a lower temperature if water (25 to 50 ppm) is present.

STATIC FRICTION

Resistance of start of motion.

FULL ARC ADMISSION

In full-arc admission, all regulating valves open but only at a percentage of their full opening. With load increase, they all open more fully. This provides more uniform heating around the high-pressure part of the turbine. Most modern controls start with full-arc and switch to partial arc to reduce throttling losses through the valves.

BOOT

To start a computer, which initiates a series of internal checks and programs which ready the computer for use.

DELAYED PLAN POSITION INDICATOR

A plan position indicator on which the start of the sweep is delayed so that the center represents a selected range. This allows distant targets to be displayed on a larger-scale presentation.

DELAYED TIME BASE SWEEP

A sweep, the start of which is delayed, usually to provide an expanded scale for a particular part. Usually shortened to DELAYED SWEEP, and sometimes to DELAYED TIME BASE.
