LANGMUIR DIFFUSION PUMP

A type of diffusion pump in which the mercury vapor emerges from a nozzle, giving it motion in a direction away from the high-vacuum side of the pump.

BILGE KEELS

Pair of keels on either side of the hull, usually slanted outwards. In yachts, they allow the use of a drying mooring, the boat standing upright on the keels (and often a skeg) when the tide is out.

JACOB'S LADDER

A rope ladder suspended from the side of a vessel and used for boarding.

Metal plates bolted to the side of a vessel, by which the lower rigging is secured to the hull.
