OSCILLOSCOPE
An instrument for producing a visual representation of oscillations or changes in an electric current. The face of the cathode-ray tube used for this representation is called a SCOPE or SCREEN.

BLANK
1. To cut off the electron beam of a television picture tube, camera tube, or cathode-ray oscilloscope tube during the process of retrace by applying a rectangular pulse voltage to the grid or cathode during each retrace interval. Also known as beam blank. 2. The result of the final cutting operation on a natural crystal.

DARK-TRACE TUBE
A cathode-ray tube having a specially coated screen which changes color but does not necessarily luminesce when struck by the electron beam. It shows a dark trace on a bright back- ground.

HYDROSTATIC TEST
A pressure test by water at room temperature applied to a boiler to determine its safety, as a check on repairs or to trace suspected leakage.

TRACE
The luminous line resulting from the radial movement of the points of impingement of the electron stream on the face of the cathode-ray tube of a radar indicator. See also SWEEP.

CYCLOIDAL GEAR TEETH
Gear teeth whose profile is formed by the trace of a point on a circle rolling without slippage on the outside or inside of the pitch circle of a gear; now used only for clockwork and timer gears.

FLUOROLOGGING
A well-logging technique in which well cuttings are examined under ultraviolet light for fluorescence radiation related to trace occurrences of oil.
