Related Terms

FILLING

Increase in atmospheric pressure, particularly within a low. Decrease in pressure is called DEEPENING

Pressure

The force exerted by a liquid or gas on a unit area. Three pressures may be involved: gauge pressure, the unit pressure above atmospheric pressure; absolute pressure, gauge pressure plus the atmospheric pressure; vacuum pressure; the pressure below atmospheric pressure usually expressed in inches of Hg.

ALTIMETER SETTING

The value of atmospheric pressure to which the scale of an aneroid altimeter is set.

BAROMETRIC PRESSURE

Atmospheric pressure as determined by a barometer usually expressed in inches of mercury.

CYCLONE

  1. A meteorological phenomena characterized by relatively low atmospheric pressure and winds which blow counterclockwise around the center in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. 2. The name by which a tropical storm having winds of 34 knots or greater is known in the South Indian Ocean.

VACUUM PUM

Low-pressure air compressor that takes suction from a region below atmospheric pressure (turbine condenser) and discharge into the atmosphere.

PRESSURE GRADIENT

A measure of the rate of change in atmospheric pressure with distance. The closer the isobars are together, the higher the pressure gradient is and the stronger the winds will be.

FAHRENHEIT TEMPERATURE

Temperature based on a scale in which, under standard atmospheric pressure

PRESSURE GAGE

Pressure differential above or below atmospheric pressure.

VARDAR

A cold fall wind blowing from the northwest down the Vardar valley in Greece to the Gulf of Salonica. It occurs when atmospheric pressure over eastern Europe is higher than over the Aegean Sea, as is often the case in winter. Also called VARDARAC.
