A type of feedwater heater operating with water and steam in direct contact. It is designed to heat the water and drive off oxygen.

Related Terms

CLOSED FEEDWATER HEATER

An indirect -contact feedwater heater; that is, one in which the steam and water are separated by tubes or coils.

CASCADING DRAIN

A flow of water into the closed shell of a feedwater heater from a water source maintained at a higher pressure.

EXTRACTION TURBINE

In an extraction turbine, steam is withdrawn from one or more stages, at one or more pressures, for heating, plant process, or feedwater heater needs. They are often called 'bleeder turbines'.

CONDENSATE

Condensed water resulting from the removal of latent heat from steam.

SATURATED STEAM

Steam that is fully saturated with latent heat and has no water particles present.

FEEDWATER

Treated water that is supplied to the boiler to replace the boiler water that has been converted to steam and has been removed from the boiler.

WATER TUBE

A tube in a boiler having the water and steam on the inside and heat applied to the outside.

BOILER

A closed vessel in which water is heated, steam is generated, steam is superheated, or any combination thereof, under pressure or vacuum by the application of heat from combustible fuels, electricity, or nuclear energy. The term dose not include such facilities of an integral part of a continuous processing unit but does include fired units of heating or vaporizing liquids other than water where these units are separate from processing systems and are complete within themselves.

UNIT HEATER

A heater with electric resistance, steam, or hot water heating elements to heat the air. Natural or forced draft units are designed for wall mounting.

JET CONDENSER

A direct contact heat exchanger in which steam to be condensed comes into direct contact with the cooling water (cold condensate) which is usually introduced in the form of a spray from a jet.
