COMPASS NORTH

The direction north as indicated by a magnetic compass; the reference direction for measurement of compass directions.

MAGNETIC CUTTER

[ENG ACOUS] A cutter in which the mechanical displacements of the recording stylus are produced by the action of magnetic fields.

GRAIN

A unit of measure commonly used in water analysis for the measurement of impurities in water. (17.1 grains = 1 part per million

INDUCTRACK

A magnetic levitation concept for trains and other moving objects that uses special arrays of permanent magnets to achieve levitation forces, and is inherently stable.

MAGNETIC MERIDIAN

A line of horizontal magnetic force of the earth. A compass needle without deviation lies in the magnetic meridian.

PERFORMANCE EFFORT RATING

A technique in work measurement used to determine the leveling factor to be applied to an operator or a group of operators by short, randomly spaced observations of the performance index.

BARRELS PER STREAM DAY

A measurement used to denote rate of oil or oil-product flow while a fluid-processing unit is in continuous operation. Abbreviated BSD.

THERMOGRAPHY

The use of infrared thermography whereby temperatures of a wide variety of targets can be measured remotely and without contact. This is accomplished by measuring the infrared energy radiating from the surface of the target and converting this measurement to an equivalent surface temperature.

BUBBLE TEST

Measurement of the largest opening in the mesh of a filter screen; determined by the pressure needed to force air or gas through the screen while it is submerged in a liquid.

CELESTIAL OBSERVATION

Observation of celestial phenomena. The expression is applied in navigation principally to the measurement of the altitude of a celestial body, and sometimes to measurement of azimuth, or to both altitude azimuth. The expression may also be applied to the data obtained by such measurement. Also called SIGHT in navigation usage.
