A section of land nearly surrounded by water. Frequently, but not necessarily, a peninsula is connected to a larger body of land by a neck or isthmus.

VOLUME FLOW RATE
The volume of fluid flowing through the cross- section of a conduit in unit time at the pressure and temperature prevailing in that section.

The mean velocity distribution of a fluid at a cross- section of a conduit. The velocity profile may be visualized by means of a two- or three-dimensional graph.

ABOVE-WATER HULL
The hull section of a vessel above the waterline, the visible part of a ship.

A section of otherwise muddy shoreline suitable for mooring or hauling out.

The 'valley' between the strands of a rope or cable. Before serving a section of laid rope e.g. to protect it from chafing, it may be 'wormed' by laying yarns in the cuntlines, giving that section an even ncylindrical shape.

The middle section of a vessel with reference to the longitudinal plane, as distinguished from fore or aft.

SHAFT ALLEY
The section of a ship that houses the propulsion shaft, running from the engine room to the stuffing box or stern tube.

STANDING PART
The section of a rope at a cleat or a block that is under tension, as opposed to the loose end.

UNDERWATER HULL
The underwater section of a vessel beneath the waterline, normally not visible except when in drydock.

A hull with the bottom section in the shape of a 'V'.
