HYDRODYNAMIC LUBRICATION

A system of lubrication in which the shape and relative motion of the sliding surfaces causes the formation of a fluid film having sufficient pressure to separate the surfaces.

FLUID

A substance readily assuming the shape of the container in which it is placed; e.g. oil, gas, water or mixtures of these. A general classification including liquids and gases.

SOLID

Any substance having a definite shape which it does not readily relinquish. More generally, any substance in which the force required to produce a deformation depends upon the magnitude of the deformation rather than upon the rate of deformation.

ANCHOR BALL

A round black shape hoisted in the forepart of a vessel to show that it is anchored.

DOWNHAUL

A line used to control either a mobile spar, or the shape of a sail. A downhaul can also be used to retrieve a sail back on deck.

BOOM VANG

A sail control that lets one apply downward tension on a boom, countering the upward tension provided by the sail. The boom vang adds an element of control to sail shape when the sheet is let out enough that it no longer pulls the boom down. Boom vang tension helps control leech twist, a primary component of sail power.

DEVIL TO PAY

A difficult and unpleasant job (with no resources) because of the shape of the seam (up against the stanchions) or if the devil refers to the garboard seam, it must be done with the ship slipped or careened.

DROGUE

A device to slow a boat down in a storm so that it does not speed excessively down the slope of a wave and crash into the next one. It is generally constructed of heavy flexible material in the shape of a cone. See also sea anchor.

OUTHAUL

A line used to control the shape of a sail.

V BOTTOM

A hull with the bottom section in the shape of a 'V'.
