DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE INDICATOR

An indicator which signals the difference in pressure between two points, typically between the upstream and downstream sides of a filter element.

PRESSURE DROP

Resistance to flow created by the element (media) in a filter or other equipment. Defined as the difference in pressure upstream (inlet side of the unit) and downstream (outlet side of the unit).

RETURN LINE FILTRATION

Filters located upstream of the reservoir but after fluid has passed through the system's output components (cylinders, motors, etc.).

GAS RECIRCULATION

The reintroduction of part of the combustion gas at a point upstream of the removal point, in the lower furnace for the purpose of controlling steam temperature.

BETA RATIO

For a single orifice the beta ratio is the ratio of the orifice bore diameter to that of the upstream pipe diameter. However, since in burner designs typically there is more than one orifice at a riser pipe exit, the beta ratio is equal to the square root of the ratio between total area of the fuel ports to that of the upstream pipe area.

REVERSING FALLS

Falls which flow alternately in opposite directions in a narrow channel in the St. John River, New Brunswick, Canada, due to the large range of tide and a constriction in the river. The direction of flow is upstream or downstream according to whether it is high or low water on the outside, the falls disappearing at the half- tide level.

AVERAGING PITOT TUBE

A flowmeter that consists of a rod extending across a pipe with several interconnected upstream holes, which simulate an array of pitot tubes across the pipe, See pound.

BEAR TRAP GATE

A type of crest gate with an upstream leaf and a downstream leaf which rest in a horizontal position, one leaf overlapping the other, when the gate is lowered.

DRAINAGE GALLERY
