Carbon Dioxide

Related Terms

CARBON DIOXIDE

Compound of carbon and oxygen (CO2) which is sometimes used as a refrigerant. Refrigerant number is R-744.

DE-CARBONATION

Refers to the removal of carbon dioxide from the boiler feedwater.

CARBAMATES

A white powdery substance produced by the reaction of ammonia with carbon dioxide.

COMBUSTION

The rapid reaction of fuel and oxidant (usually oxygen in air) to produce light, heat and noise. Major products of combustion for hydrocarbon fuels (e.g., natural gas, refinery gas, fuel oils) are carbon dioxide and water vapor. Trace products include carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides, which are pollutants.

ABSORPTION TOWER

A vertical, cylindrical pressure vessel in which two fluids contact each other and one fluid absorbs certain constituents from the other. An example is the contactor in a gas sweetening system, which uses amine to absorb hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide from raw natural gas.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS

A process in which organisms with the aid of chlorophyll (green plant enzyme), convert carbon dioxide and inorganic substances into oxygen and additional plant material, using sunlight for energy. All green plants grow by this process.

GREENHOUSE EFFECT

The process by which the Earth's atmosphere limits the reflection of solar heat back into space. The increasing proportion of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is increasing the Earth's heat retention, and threatening climate change.

ACCEPTOR

A calcined carbonate used to absorb the carbon dioxide evolved during a coal gasification process.

AGGRESSIVE CARBON DIOXIDE

The carbon dioxide dissolved in water in excess of the amount required to precipitate a specified concentration of calcium ions as calcium carbonate; used as a measure of the corrosivity.

ACID GASES

The hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide found in natural and refinery gases which, when combined with moisture, form corrosive acids; known as sour gases when hydrogen sulfide and mercaptans are present.
